Relaxation
Physical relaxation appears very easy however, in practice it needs to be learnt and practised. By teaching techniques on how to relax, this allows clients to take responsibility for their stress reactions and reduce distress of many conditions. Tensing muscles and holding breath when tense becomes the norm. The key to relaxation is to train the body to feel the tension and recognise when the breathing reflects tension. The aim of relaxation is to control the breathing and muscle tension in order to calm the mind and body.
Through physical relaxation, a client can learn to slow down their breathing, breathe deeply and relax their muscles. As the relaxation response starts to happen other responses change automatically and as the breathing calms down, the muscles start to relax and the rest of the body automatically changes – i.e. the heart rate slows down as well.
Relaxation can help to:
- Maintain emotional and physical health
- Aid restful sleep
- Reduce harmful effects of stress
- Relieve muscular tension
- Promote optimum oxygen levels for the body
- Actively help the body to recover and repair
